Entre un complément du nom, de l'adjectif, de l'adverbe et du pronom, il y a toujours une préposition (pour, en, etc.) ou un article (de, du, de la, des). La relation entre le sujet et le verbe est que le sujet accomplit l'action du verbe sur le complément d'objet. Peut être qualifié de complément : tout syntagme supplémentaire accompagnant le syntagme nominal, le syntagme verbal ou la phrase. On distingue traditionnellement :
